Maine The Way Life Should Be

Maine The Way Life Should Be is a public education website campaign spearheaded by GLAD and EqualityMaine to educate Maine citizens or “Mainers” on what same-sex marriage really is. It features user submitted content of same-sex couples, their friends and allies telling their own stories on the need for marriage equality in Maine.

The design evokes a natural, rugged visual aesthetic regularly identified with the state. I placed emphasis on visual and written storytelling by real Mainers rather than faceless organizations. This creates a personal connection and lets the visitor identify with people who may be like them -  straight parents of a lesbian who wants to get married, a same-sex couple, a community minister or an adult child of an LGBT family.

With Maine being so large and rural, many residents identify with their home county rather than the town in which they live. I emphasized this on individual story pages to demonstrate the geographical diversity of support. The site also made it easy to share via social media channels, and encouraged any visitors to share their own story.
